Supportive bras

Wondered how other larger chested ladies get on with finding bras which are supportive while looking nice.

I've lost quite a bit of weight lately (about 2 stone since November woo!) and was hoping it had equated to bust size, not as much as I'd hoped but it has a little. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a nice comfy yet not frumpy supportive black bra for work.

Went looking earlier as need to get out and about more before back to work Monday and wanted something nice and comfy for work, especially as I have one of the surgery wounds right below my bust. Got measured and tried some on and was really disappointed at the lack of support and they weren't very comfortable either.

Didn't end up buying anything and the lady who measured me said they recommend waiting about 12 weeks after surgery before buying a new bra but wondering if anyone has any tips on good places to try with a good value range.

Can't spend much and already usually have to pay more as I'm a F cup (down from GG at least!). Not looking for anything padded (have quite enough padding already!) or plunging or cleavage boosting.

I used to get J D Williams catalogues as they specialize in wide shoes, but their lingerie section specifically catered for larger ladies and most of it was really nice stuff.

I agree with those advocating Figleaves website and all my bras are Fantasie from them. They are so pretty, feminine and comfortable. Not cheap but worth it for the good shape they give you. Not a fan of M&S bras at all.

I'm 42 B & I have a real problem in shops, because I'm a B cup they seem to think I should be a lot bigger because I'm 42. Most of me is a wide back.

I can only buy on line & this site is ideal. They are a bit pricey but I think to get a good fit and have comfort with it then one has to pay more. I've got a big scar where I had heart surgery 6 months ago but these all cotton no wires bra's are so soft & comfy I don't have to worry.
(After my op I was told not to wear a bra for 10 weeks)

There is a new range of bra made by Triumph I think which has been designed for larger ladies who did not want to wear wired bras. can't remember the name, but they are in the shops. Have a moulded shelf in place, and seem to have potential for a comfortable fit.
Bravissimo have a brilliant mail order service, and if you Google large size bras, you will find lots of companies selling them as well. homeshoppingdirect.com also do a good range of larger sizes.

Im an E but have such a smalll back 30/32 i struggle and i LOVE asda bras...they only start at a 34 mostly x

I'm 36F and I struggle with the shoulder straps. They seem to be made for bigger women. I've given up looking for nice bras and stick to t-shirt bra types.

As a bit of info - I bought some bras in Florida last year, such a huge selection of larger sizes, but several of them had a lovely padded section on the strap which really helps if, like me, you find that they dig into the shoulder. Why is it almost impossible to find this padding on bras in UK?

My 42-44d loobys are supported best in cheapo unpadded Tesco bras; they have good shoulders & back elastic with decent shape @ £1.50approx. I have got sports bras but cant breathe in them.

Thanks to everyone for their replies :) I have issues with straps slipping too - on a previous fit I was told the straps should fit straight vertical but I've run out of shoulder by then so always have to have them at a slant and pulling them up all the time.

I'm a 36/38 back (depends on the bra) which wasn't changed despite the weight loss (!?!) down from a GG to an F cup though, again, I find it really does depend on the bras as a lot of them are different. I remember being in Bravissimo years ago and them saying they have different measurements to M&S and you should try on and have fitted all bras as measurements change from shop to shop and between ranges.

I was hoping to find something less heavy duty. I had a look on Bravissimo last night and found some lovely looking black ones, bit more than I was hoping to spend but might just have to invest in some good ones. Will have to try and get down to try some on.

Have people had much success with buying bras online?

Rozia, essentially I've been on quite a limited low fat diet (low fat doesn't mean low calorie necessarily though) and cut down on portion sizes. I have been unwell too though - it was for gallstones which can be made worse by eating fatty food. Pain is one hell of a motivator though. Just hope to keep it off now but it has changed my outlook on eating generally though - seeing how much fat is in everything horrified me.

No trick to it at all, just eating less and minimal fat - preferably also low calorie.

Bravissimo is an excellent company to buy from online - if you are not happy with the size or fit, they instantly replace them at no cost, until you find the right one. There is also an advice line, should it be needed .
It does pay to get a better quality bra when you are big busted, the design and fit is usually better.

The comfiest bras I've ever bought are from Primark of all places! But they are not exactly attractive but that doesn't bother me, I want comfort. They are supportive too. I vary sizes to be honest and have one boob bigger than the other so quite difficult when bra shopping.
I got measured in M&S last year and bought a couple of bras, never again! Within 10 mins, my bigger boob was bulging/hanging over the top.
The primark ones wash really well and fit lovely, I'm a 36E there, I think they do go upto an F though.
Let us know if you do find anything you would recommend.

The boss lost a huge amount of weight over the last few years (12st 9lb in total) and now her "boobydoos" (that's a terrible word) are her main respite for fat cells, she fluctuates between a 34C and 34DD and has had to buy loads to make sure she's "covered"....well that's what she told me anyway, far cry from a 54HH though.

Keep plugging away at the weight loss girls if that what's right for you loads of support groups that can help you in many many ways...good luck.

Slap, a huge well done to yout boss. That is some serious commitment, Boobydoos (I disagree with you, I'm liking that word!) go up and down depending on monthly cycles and othee nonsense.

For everyday wear I buy the fasten up the front ones that are advertised in the papers. So comfy! Earlier this year I got measured for a bra in M & S. They only measure under your boobs now. When I asked why she said we are not allowed to measure anywhere else now.We have to go by looks only. So how do they get the cup size right. She brought 8 different bras out, including wired when I said I only want unwired. Only one of them fitted, I did buy it though. Quite happy with it on the whole.
