My female partner once had variofocals and even after months complained of headaches. I noticed that when she was reading, her head/neck were bent "abnormally" downwards. I told her this and she soon realised that this was the problem. Since then, many years ago, she gave up varios and went back to separate pairs of reading and medium/long distance specs. Many headaches are caused by neck-strain even if this is not obvious to the sufferer. To save unnecessary expense at first, why not READ with non-optically corrected reading specs from supermarket or Boots while only using varios for medium/long distance use. If headaches disappear then ditch varios for two separate optically corrected pairs, each for different function.
