How would I recognse it....in myself or others?
I have the ability. And I'd stop playing with that if I were you. It'll fall off!
Yes and yes, although it took me a long time. I do Yoga everyday and meditate and it was years after I first reached alpha state that I could do it at will.
I know someone who claims that through meditation, he's experienced it several times - and I've no reason to doubt his word.
They used to do it daily at the London Planetarium.
"I know someone who claims that through meditation, he's experienced it several times - and I've no reason to doubt his word."

Although, presumably, Naomi, if he claimed to achieve it through prayer rather than meditation, you'd find every reason to doubt it.
I've tried to do it as a deliberate choice, read the books on it. No success. Although as I suspect we are more than just an illusion caused by firing neurons I don't dismiss the possibility of the experience.
rojash, no. Depending on the nature of the prayer, I see little difference between that and meditation.
Very interesting. I became interested in it years ago. Bought the classic Muldoon/Carrington book on the subject.
Even tho' I have practised Yoga for 38 years and have meditated, etc. have never managed to achieve it like NOX.
Surely just a dream state or similar?

How would anybody know the difference?

Is there any science associated with it?
I've not experienced it, but I accept it is possible and would love to do so. I have a friend who claims that she travels astrally in her sleep. The cynical reply would be that she is dreaming, but the fact that she's so grounded in all other respects makes me feel that there might be something in it.
Can someone explain briefly what it is?

(I'm always a bit dubious about what I type into Google on my work laptop).
In a nutshell There are two of us in each of us- a physical body and an astral/etheric body The astral body (the body of feeling and sensation resides in the physical body and 'animates' the physical body. Under certain circumstances, and always at death, the astral body leaves the physical body so that one may be in two places at one time. Sylvan Muldoon had o o b experiences in his early teens frequently and involuntarily and went on to find out more about it thus collaborating with Hereward Carrington and writing books about the subject.
That is the theory behind it
I have had two very strange experiences in my sleep, the first at 22yrs old & the second at 35yrs old; after explaining them to someone I was told it was AP. The first was the strangest, I was being summoned by someone who used to look after me as a youngster, and at the time she was dying, however, she did pull through (died a few years later), I wasn't particularly close to her and could not understand it at all - but both of them seriously freaked me out.

I felt myself 'rise above' my sleeping body and was being beckoned towards this woman - I knew it was her, but she appeared to have no features on her face. The second, again I was 'rising above' but it was as if I was being 'carried' - there were 2 people in this, though I did not recognise them as anyone familiar, again they had no features on their faces.

I awoke immediately after, on both occasions - and was frightened and very confused. I'm not a particularly vivid dreamer as such.

I'd be interested to know if this was AP - or just a very vivid, weird dream...!
I tend to think I would be in my physical body rather than a physical body being in me. Which to encourages me to question whether there is a second body, an ethereal body, just hanging around nearby for me to switch over to when needed; or whether this is just an unnecessarily complex hypothesis. Maybe it is one's essence (however that is defined) that simply wanders off, away from its usual physical bodily residence, without a need for a further 'body' as such. But in either consideration it does suggest one's essence would be located in one's physical body, and not merely 'tied in' to what that body senses, from a different place.
megg......the "two in one" explanation has it's protagonists and antagonists, each group unlikely to change their stance.

Was your experience a dream or an AP?

Depends in which camp you reside........so take your pick.
I tried it once. My dad found a paperback about it on the tube and gave it to me. I thought it was a load of mumbo jumbo but I did seriously try it.

I honestly don't know if it worked or if I was just self trancing in some way but I do remember getting so far away from my body and then getting scared that I would never get back in it. I never tried it after that.
From what I can make out Astral projection is a dream state that some people can learn to go into at will. That is all. Has anybody ever discovered anything whilst in this state that they didn't already know or had enough information to deduce? I suspect that astral projection is just another name for the 'flying dreams' associated with puberty and sexual awareness.
There have been cases of 'near death' experiences when people have apparently died in hospital or on the operating table, but have recovered and later been able to recount conversations they have witnessed while being out of their bodies. Would that be astral travel?
I don't know if its possible or not. Some would say that experiences can be put down to chemical imbalances at the time esp near death experiences. All I know is that after a friend recommending it, someone who said that he could control his heart beat and often left his body....I tried meditating and something happened, it was hard getting to that state and I never have done it again but the lights were a lot closer than I thought which startled me to consciousness?
