Sugartits, interesting why you say this as the labs that you send your dna to are in fact doctors and scientists.
Do you have a reason to believe that all of the dna companies out there aren't reliable for some reason?

And I think you will need permission from the owner of the DNA to get the results.

The owner is a newborn and it's a covert paternity issue.

i know that if there ever was a case that i would need a DNA test i would want it done in a controlled, clean, sterile environment. otherwise just about anyone could give a sample and therefore give a wrong result. Also finding out the true paternity of a child, well.......can you really put a price on that?

There was an expose a while ago on these companies that do DNA testing, they weren't always correct, so you could be putting your peace of mind and sanity in the hands of god knows who. I think to test DNA from hair, it needs to come from the root, not cut off, that's just my thought though, I could be proved wrong.

my partner had to have one with his ex 10 years ago, his GP sorted it out for them, both had to be consenting and present and it cost them £300. Turns out he wasnt the father, but like he said, regardless of the cost of paternity test, he simple HAD to know

A DNA test can cost anywhere from around £100 - £350.

Hair samples would probably not be accepted for paternity testing by a reputable lab.Motherless DNA testing ( ie only samples from the prospective father and child) can be carried out, but are considered less accurate and more open to interpretation. Much more accurate is a DNA test on prospective father, mother and child.

Given how open to contamination and thus incorrect interpretations a DNA test can be, all elements of such testing should ideally be carried out by experienced individuals, who fully understand the need to protect against cross contamination.

Paternity testing is a sensitive issue, with potentially life changing consequences for all concerned ; Child, Mother and Father. Better by far to have professional guidance in such issues, such as from a GP.

Consent is definitely required from any reputable lab prior to testing. The signatures of all concerned, and most especially from someone with parental responsibility for the child would need to sign a consent form.
