In my life I have had experience/knowledge of six people who have taken their own lives. The methods used were hanging, gas oven, pills, cut wrists.

Does anyone know what the most common method is of taking your own life?
Not that I am considering this. It's just that,as two deaths have been fairly recent, it has got me thinking of the different ways.

Following from Paddy. I used to have a family member who drove trains way back when and after the third person he 'killed' he just couldn't do it any more. Must be awful to be the driver in a situation like this, you couldn't help but blame yourself a little.

Only known one successful suicide that was hanging . Had to deal with a few pill takers but none were really serious about it just attention seeking.

At a particularly low part in my life I considered jumping in front of a train, simply because it would be quick.

That is a stage I don't want to revisit, I was very messed up at the time.

Friend aged 13 took her fathers brompton Cocktail as she had already seen her mum die that year and couldn't cope with caring for her father too
Another classmate age 15 jumped off a tower block leaving a note about her father abusing her
Later on my boss gassed himself in his car, another friend took an overdose
Another friend hanged himself leaving a girlfriend and three young daughters... 6 months after telling me ther is a thin line between sad and mad and you are about to cross it and convincing me to get help... I'd already obtained the means was just waiting for the opportunity,,, I have also stood at the end of a platform waiting for an express train and been grabbed by a member of station staff who called my now ex husband to come and collect me... his comments I am busy put her in a taxi

Serious question - I have never contemplated suicide, and (apart from a couple of people I knew slightly when I was about 20) I have not known people who have done it. But you have known quite a few. Does it start to seem more attractive as a solution when you know others who have done it?

Yes... its an act that becomes more likely if a close friend or family member does it also suicide 'rashes' are well known usually involving teenagers

Hanging yourself must be a dreadful way to go.

After all a proper hangman does it in a way that breaks the neck instantly, but an amateur presumably just gets slowly strangled.

I have no intention of doing it myself, but if I did I would have to find a way that was painless.

I have often thought I would want to end it if I knew I knew I was getting Alzheimers, to release my family from the horror of looking after me. However I don't know how I would do it.

Hopkirk, I presume that's when people's thoughts start turning toward Switzerland. More than 100 Brits have died there. Not just Alzheimer's, there are other lingering, terminal diseases.
