18
18!
or 21 in USA.
If having a meal in a pub, it is legal to drink beer or cider when aged 16.  (in the UK)
18 in the UK.
Yep ICEMANSAV! Don't forget how lucky you Europeans are...the legal drinking/ and buying age in the U.S. is 21!
cheesefreek that may be true but you still have to be 18 to buy it

And, adding to Funkychicken's comments, you have to be WITH an over 18.  You can't just buy a bowl of chips, get someone else to get your pint in and then just let them leave!

On the continent, many countries allow 16 year olds to buy low % volume beer and cider, but keep them off the strong stuff til they're 18.  Very sensible opinion in my age.

Cheesefreak is close but you can't have beer with a meal at 16, you can only drink cider or perry (pear cider) with a meal (and this has to be a substantial meal not a bag of crisps)
In Denmark you can buy what ever you want from the age of 16, in restaurants, bars pubs etc from 18. The law that states you have to be 16 to buy alcohol from shops is new, at least when I was 16, eight years ago, there was no such rule and even a ten year old could buy alcohol.

The legal age for drinking alcohol on licensed premises and for buying it there, whether as off-sales or on-sales, both to remain at 18. An exception will allow 16 and 17 year olds accompanied by an adult to consume alcohol of less than spirits strength with a table meal on licensed premises.

That's UK law!!

i heard that in ireland as long as you can see over the bar you could drink. is that true? by the way in the us you have to be 21, so not fair. i was done partying by then! wish i lived in the uk at 16! although i would have been a horible drunk!
SASHAGREEN - seriously, in the UK it's not easy to drink in a pub if you're under 18.  It's really only possible with fake ID (which of course is illegal) or if you're out with family for a meal.  Yes, buying alcohol in off licenses is possible under age, but it's illegal.  Don't think that we openly allow under 18s to drink in the UK!  Most citizens try hard not to let it happen!

If you're 15 and were hoping your next birthday could be celebrated by an alcoholic drink, I guess it's time to start being EXTRA nice to mum and dad! (If you're a lot older than that, I apologise!  I was just making an assumption based purely on the question!)
