Music in church services

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but here goes. We need to provide two songs for a funeral service held in a church. The two songs in particular we've struggled to find in the usual music shops and we don't have them on CD (and don't know anyone who does), we are running out of time to order them. Why does it have to be original CD's - is it a copyright issue? I thought that by downloading songs from say ITunes is legal? Someone else told me they just refuse them because sometimes the copied CD's don't work, but if we checked they did, why could we not use them?

When people have a crematurium service, C.D.'s are acceptable.so why not the Church. It is not as though you are going to sell them. I would have a word with the person conducting the service and suggest that this is what songs/music the deceased wanted.

We can use CD's but they've got to be original recordings, I am being told they cannot be CD's which have been used to copy downloaded songs

Can you not legally buy the songs as mp3 downloads?

Try your local library, ours has a very good range, and if they don't have it in, they can usually request it from another library. It would be helpful to know exactly what it is you are looking for.

I think it is a copyeight issue as they can't check that you have a legal right to the music even though you might have legally bought it if you know what i mean? I also have a feeling that itunes purchases are for personal and not public use and even though there might be only you there, funerals are counted as "public occasions" and the chapels and churches need a public music licence.

yup, itunes purchases are for personal use, which COULD be interpreted as not for playing in a public place such as a church service.

Thanks for your replies. The songs are by Elvis Presley, Amazing Grace & Lord take my hand. I've tried our local music stores to no avail, I don't know anyone who has these particular songs on albums. I've found the CD's online, but now it's too late to order them and receive them on time :-(

If you go via ebay, contact the seller and ask for them to send it recorded/next day signed for delivery, most will do it if you explain the circumstances.
