Denise Welch on Piers Morgan
12 Answers
Mrs Flop was watching this the other day when Morgan began asking Denise Welch about her marriage break-up: he also asked whether there had been any violence.
Denise Welch stated that Tim Healy had never raised a hand to her, but she had to him, including on one occasion when she hit him over the head with a lampstand.
This caused much hilarity.
I found this odd - had Tim Healy hit Denise Welch, it would not have been considered funny and, no doubt, the 'Red Tops' would have run stories along the lines of "Auf Wiedersehn's Dennis admits to wife-beating"
So, my question is, why was this domestic abuse considered funny?

I should imagine that the police don't take domestic violence when the man is the victim very seriously. Which is wrong. It's high time we rethought this.
The police, CPS, doctors etc do take domestic violence against men seriously. It accounts for at least 25% of all domestic violence.

Many men don't report it, just as many women don't when they are the victim of abuse.

if asked, not one person in that audience would say it was ok...but their instinctive reaction was it was funny - and part of the problem is you cant tell people how to feel or what they should be thinking ... you can only inspire it in them to think or feel it themselves.
and thats why small, seemingly petty insignificant changes are actually necessary ... they plant the seeds of change and we must encourage them.
in particular some of the apparently pointless and silly new things thta get introduced in schools - they are just small almost unnoticable changes that over time will become 'the norm'.
you will not change the perceptions of people aged 40-50 or whatver just by telling them their current perceptions are wrong - they will nod etc and agree but inside they are the same ... the only real way is to start at the 'source' and bring up the next generation with a different perception - baby steps i suppose.
