My 80 year old mother is having hysterectomy in a few weeks. How long will she need someone to stay with her when she is discharged from hospital ? TIA

Depends on what type of hysterectomy and the presence or absence of other contributory medical conditions.

Vaginal hysterectomy ...uncomplicated post operative recovery...about 10 days after discharge from hospital.

Abdominal hysterectomy...uncomplicated post operative recovery...about 3 weeks.

These dates may be modified by other medical conditions which may complicate her recovery.

thanks sqad . I am always grateful for your help and advice.
Mine was keyhole so I assume that is a vaginal one.....
I recovered with in a couple of weeks...but I was only 42. All depends on how fit your mother is at 80! Even I had trouble turning over in bed for a few days.

At 80 it really depends on other health problems if she is pretty fit then not too long maybe only a week or two but help with chores for about 4-5 weeks would be a good idea as she may still tire easily

she isnt in the best of health i must admit and is really unsteady on her feet so i am worried about her being on her own x
Speak to the occupational therapist at the hospital they will probably arrange for home care to go in 2 or 3 times a day for a few weeks.
