calpol versus calprofen

Hi, my six month old has her first cold. She is coughing and sneezing (usually when she has a mouthful of food!). She does not have a temperature, and is fairly normal in herself except the copious snot. She is however miserable at night. do you think calpol or calprofen would be better for her?

I'm no expert but I would have thought that Calpol which contains Paracetamol would be better. However, I'm of the school of thought that you can buy a generic form of either which would just be as effective and a lot cheaper.

While you are at the chemist buy one of those syringe things for getting medicine into children.

If she hasn't got a temperature, do you really need the calpol at all? If I felt I had to give something though, maybe the calprofen for it's anti-inflammatory properties.

i was thinking how miserable she is and how parats/brufen make me feel better when i have a cold. Also, it sends her to sleep!

you can buy a medicine dummy. It has a hinged compartment to measure the medicine into and a plunger at the other end---- brilliant when the little one keeps shaking her head and you've got a teaspoon of medicine in your hand!! Believe me, Calpol is very sticky!!! Hope she's better soon. Baby Vick and Karvol capsules are good too.

We live in an age where parents give kids Calpol etc at the first sign of a sniffle.

When I lived with the 1st Mrs Joe (aka the b!tch) our neighbour had five young kids and as a matter of course she used to give them all a spoon of Calpol just before bed EVERY night to "help them sleep" as she put it......reckon when they were actually ill Calpol probably had little effect

well joe, as you have already said that men should practically have nothing to do with child rearing, and in fact my husband feeding our daughter shows a lack of balls on his part, i'm not sure i'll be taking your advice re calpol.
my friend has a good saying which i think would have applied to you - "the expression slept like a baby needs to be changed to slept like a husband"

- i took her to the gp today - she agreed with your comment about eother is ok, but told me to give it 4 hrly as she has a really red throat

bednobs - i think its perfectly fine to give your little one calpol, particularly if it helps her settle for sleep when she's poorly and grizzly at night. I hope she feels better soon. Joeluke - get a grip.
