I went to specsavers today for my annual sight test, but after a few 'pre-test' tests, the optition said he did not want to test my sight as my blood sugar was not under controll, and it would not be a good idea to give me new glasses that might not be suitable in a few weeks when my control will be better, I have to agree as I have got a stinking cold, and have had for about three weeks, this has never happened to me in 36 years, so my question is, how have things changed that he could tell what my blood sugar had been like recently? (he did'nt ask me) I know I should have asked at the time, but I was so surprized that I did'nt.

unless he asked you, had your medical notes or tested you, i can't conceive a possible way he would know
Breathing pattern, shortness of breath, breath odour. Sometimes you can get a noticeable fruity odour to your breath (diabetic ketoacidosis)

Opticians do get very close to your face :)
Your pre tests may have included a check of your distance prescription which can change if your diabetes is poorly controlled due to changes of the lens inside tour eye. This may have triggered the though of the poor control of your diabetes and they would have then asked you questions about your general health at present,
I agree with york310, in that your optician may have noticed subtle changes in the blood vessels of your retina around the optic disc and small patches of fluid (exudates) which may suggest that your diabetes was not that well under control......just a suggestion.

thanks for throwing a bit of light on that, squad and york, that must be the answer, I have been really under the weather with this cold, every time I think its on its way out , back it comes worse than ever, so blood sugar control has been hard even though I have been strict with myself, thanks for other answers as well.
He may have been able to see the sugar in your lenses this is what makes your vision blurred when your sugars are high.
