Disastrous Diabetic Hb1Ac Result
9 Answers
I am really upset about my HB1ac result it is 74 (or 8.9%) in old terms. I cant believe this I am on glipazide and metformin it is terrible. I do still eat sugar but I thought the pills would bring my sugar down. I am now more than determined to get this down Im seeing GP on monday they phoned and asked me to make an appointment they are not happy with it apparently.

You cannot rely purely on the therapeutic drugs to reduce your sugar levels - you must also reduce the sugar from your diet too.

I found out I had late onset diabetes two and a half years ago. I am on two Metformin tablets a day, morning and evening. My hba1c results now are always good because I do not eat sugar!! I have had to change my diet dramatically, including alcohol. I used to love cider but now drnk John Smith's or Guinness because the carbohydrates are half that of lager, which is a lot less than cider...
Please don't stress yourself out over this its a glip thats all. Start again cut out All sugar your body can't deal with it, do as Douglas reccomends too next time you'll be fine. In my diabetic life I've had lots of glips (30years) pick yourself up dust yourself down & start all over again. Good Luck.

gordie.....your HB1ac is a fairly representative of your Blood glucose levels over the past 3 months and you must admit that your diabetic control has been a total disaster over that period.
One would not expect a different result...surely.
It is not the end of the world, don't panic, just take your medication and reduce the amount that you eat and alcoholic drinks.

Its not just sugar. All carbs change to glucose. Sugar is 100% carb. Bread is up to 50% carb. You are not producing enough insulin to cope so the excess ends up in the blood. You do not say what your lifestyle is but you should be eating a healthy all round diet, reduce your weight (if you are overweight) and getting a reasonable amount of exercise and cut out smoking (if you do!). Ask to see a dietician if necessary. HBA1c 8.9% is not massively high. A healthy lifestyle would help ge it down to normal (7%).
