No there are no rules about who can use one . You or I could get one and drive around on it no problem, nothing illegal. It is only the scooter itself that has to confirm to the rules, there is nothing about who can use one.
The old guy next door but one (he's dead now) used a mobility scooter to go to the pub and back every night. There was nowt wrong with him (well obviously there was as he's dead now)
They aren't actually permitted on the roads I don't think, however you regularly see people on the road with them, I think the Police turn a blind eye.
A lot of wrong answers here. It is illegal for anyone to use a mobility scooter that hasn't got a physical impairment of some kind. They ARE legal to be used on the roads but only the class 3 type ( 8mph ). The smaller ones can only cross from pavement to pavement.Insurance is not compulsory, even if used on the road. Ratter15's answers are totally wrong and misleading, although I agree that these rules are often abused.
They were never intended as a 'go to the pub' or ' electric shopping trolley' for the lazy..
mackfender, can you show me the legislation than prohibits an able bodied person from using a mobility scooter?
I know Class 3 mobility scooter can be used on the road, I was generalising, I think people on this thread are generally referring to the little scooters that buzz around the supermarkets.
