I've been using them for over 20 years and personally I think they're better. I have to wear lenses all the time for driving and don't want the additional weight of those clip-on things. I do not know for sure but I think normal sunglasses would be safer.
safe in what way? sunglasses are mostly for comfort unless you are driving. No ordinary sunglasses are safe for looking directly at the sun. If you use them for driving then rapides may not change in tint much if at all in the car as they often don't work behind glass. In those circs, you meed ordinary dark tinted glasses and polarised are better

I've never, either in this country or abroad, found that the light was too bright behind them.
Can't you just get some prescription sunnies? They're cheap as chips.
SeaJayPea, some car window glass doesn't let the right kind of light through to darken rapides. My current car (Rav4) does but my previous car (Jeep) didn't. All my sunnies are prescription because its the only time I need glasses.
I am still not sure what the OP meant though.
They`re safe for most people but not all which is why airline pilots are not allowed to wear them under CAA rules - in some situations, your eyes need to adjust quickly and the glasses can`t keep up, so to speak.
