I am taking 4 a day for toothache. Got another 5 days to go before I can be treated at the dentist, but a message on the box says can only be used for 3 days as they can cause addiction.
Can I take them for longer or is it dangerous?

Even 2 paracetamol won't kill the pain!

Thanks

Co-codamol! Damned predictive text!
I've found the warning to be 'over-cautious'.....you'll be fine but possibly a little constipated! :o)
A few more days shouldn't do any harm.
^ that's a laymans opinion, though
I have been taking 30/500 co codamol on and off for 11 months (apart from a gap of a few weeks when I tried something stronger) and I have had no problems .... I think the 3 day warning to to ensure you see GP for serious pain and also because they can cause constipation and can be addictive. I would say 5 days is not an issue ........... also I guess you are taking 8/500 strength too if you are buying over the counter as 30/500 is only available from GP ...... so just ensure you don't take any other paracetamol medication (as that's what the "500" bit is, 500mg of paracetamol) and see you dentist asap ............. just a suggestion but have you tried clove oil? This is meant to be great for dental pain .... never tried it, just heard it from others. Hope dentist sorts it soon x
Hate to sound like sqad, but how about ibuprofen? I don't think you're actually taking maximum dose of co-codamol anyway? So i wouldn't worry too much
pixie......\\\\.Hate to sound like sqad,\\\

Oops. Didn't mean that how it sounded! Sorry! X

Thanks guys and gals. I am only taking one tablet rather than two 4 times a day. Went to emergency dentist today, he told me there was no infection, he will see me next Thursday and Charged me £18!
Ibuprofen didn't work either. I will keep with the current tablets for a couple if days.
local anaesthetic gel from chemist helps a bit take the full dose of the cocodamol and ibuprofen regularly while you are treating acute pain you are unlikely to get addicted.
Don't be shy with the pain killers if you are in pain, just don't exceed the dose. My understanding is that you should try to get on top of the pain by taking the recommended dose, then take the next dose at the recommended time, even if you don't feel any pain. Apparently it is easier to stay on top of pain relief once established, rather than waiting until it starts hurting again and trying again to get back on top of it.
I swear by cocodamol - 8/500. They ARE addictive, hence the warning about 3 days on the pack - but if you have a clinical reason for taking them, take them for longer. As long as you keep an eye on them (and they do cause constipation at max 4 per day dose).
^ that's 4, twice a day. Don't take more frequently than 4-hourly.
Why not ring your doctor or dentist and ask?
It's only dangerous if you OD, or take ANY other products containing paracetamol at the same time. If in doubt - the best person to ask is the pharmacist at your local chemist.
and do NOT take paracetamol at the same time as you are using cocodamol
Sorry, boxtops.
You already had it covered.
