I take a multivitamin tablet every day and I am convinced that they are 'doing me good' so I was not well pleased when my daughter' GP told her that they were a waste of money and that you "pee 90per cent of them". Can anyone tell me any different? Thanks.

They are sold in the quantities they are because the companies selling them know that people will buy them. Get yourself a celebrity or famous sportspersons endorsement, a bit of fancy packaging, and then a subtle marketing blurb to suggest that most of us are feeling "run down" or "listless" or "under stress" and all thats needed is a kind of top up or booster...

It depends on your lifestyle and diet.
If you eat healthily, have no major underlying health issues & are outdoors on a daily basis then you are wasting your money
Well I can't tell you any different.
I use them when my diet is bad, sometimes I have to live on stodge because of IBS.

Thank you for your replies. That being the case, I wonder why so many of them are sold.
The supermarket shelves are full of them.
You pee 90% of whatever fortifying elixir takes your fancy so we should all give up wine, beer, spirits, tea, coffee, cola, fruit juice etc etc.
If it makes YOU feel better then take them.

The doctor sounds like he/she needs to take less water with it.

Well no, I would agree with your daughters GP.

Unless you have an established deficiency or a truly awful unbalanced diet, then you achieve very little by "topping up" your vitamin levels.

There are recommended daily quantities for vitamins. Once the body has what it needs, the rest is just excreted.

Wolfgang,

Sorry about your condition, it must be very unpleasant. You obviously feel better after taking the vitamins so the 10% that you retain must be sufficient.
They are sold in the quantities they are because the companies selling them know that people will buy them. Get yourself a celebrity or famous sportspersons endorsement, a bit of fancy packaging, and then a subtle marketing blurb to suggest that most of us are feeling "run down" or "listless" or "under stress" and all thats needed is a kind of top up or booster of our vitamins, and bobs your uncle - we all magically develop a shiny coat and wet nose, and we generally lap it up.

The actual science tells a very different story. Any excess Vitamin you imbibe is excreted.
I agree with lazygun. No need at all unless you know you have a deficiency in something.
You can get vitamins which are absorbed differently. I get this:
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
as it is sprayed under your tongue. I also get this: http://www.altrient-europe.com/product/altrient-c/ and I am convinced they both work very well.
I have IBD (Ulcerative Colitis) so don't absorb as much good stuff from food as I should.
