Hi all,

Last night whilst watching TV I suddenly felt very dizzy and nauseous. When I was in bed I found when I closed my eyes I felt that my eyeballs were rolling around in my head and the room was spinning and it wouldn't stop. It was the same when I woke this morning and it's still the same tonight. When I bend down or lie down it gets worse. I was with a friend today who suggested it may be labyrinthitis?

I am due to fly to Italy on Tuesday, will that be a problem if it is labyrinthitis? It's a bank holiday on Monday and I doubt my doc practice will be open so I'm not very sure what to do. I can get to Boots if anyone knows of any over-the-counter remedies.

Thanks everyone.

Thank you Pixie, Sqad and emmie. I will enquire about Buccastem too. x
Buccastem is an anti-nausea drug. It won`t help with the dizziness but it`s better than nothing and good to have in your travel first aid kit.
Should have said an anti - vomiting drug to be more specific
make sure you declare the stuff at the airport, others they might think you are a druggie, and end up in some dingy foreign jail... lol
You don`t need to declare it..

Lol will do emmie....although the Italians don't really bother with what you bring through or leave with! My fave place to travel to for that reason alone! ;)
237SJ...I disagree....yes...stemetil (bucastem) is an anti nausea drug but is also a labyrinthine sedative......i.e it relieves dizziness due to inner ear involvement.
a friend had to declare all the meds she was taking, and a letter from the doctor to say what it was for..
OK Sqad. I only know it from work. We only give it to stop someone vomiting.
where are you going in Italy.. my favourite country...
It does help dizziness too, but also sent me to sleep

A place called Formia....inbetween Rome and Naples. My family live there and my Nonna's house is on the beach so we stay there. Can't wait! :)
lovely, have travelled a little around Italy, Lake Garda, Amalfi, sorrento, so very beautiful..
I've suffered with that recently vodka I went to my GP, by all accounts it's called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo BPPV for short. The inner ear is the problem. Head movements are sensed in the fluid filled canals in the ear and tiny pieces of fragments (debris called otoconia) float around causes the nerve endings in the ear to become confused by the movement of the crystals. Mine had settled down and is only mild usually when I'm in bed. There is a simple treatment called the Epley manouevre which a trained doctor can do which dislodges the the debris from the ear canal. I don't think there is a over the counter remedy for this but you should see your GP.

Thanks so much for the info AYG, I appreciate that. I will try to get an appointment first thing Tuesday morning if I can. :)
suck boiled sweet; works for me as a temp remedy (low sugar)
I suffer with BPPV and it's not pleasant! Sometimes when I lie down in bed I feel so dizzy that I have to hold on to the edge of the bed because it feels as though I am falling! It doesn't affect me all the time, just now and again.

That's exactly how I felt last night Kathyan. It was horrible. I closed my eyes and could feel spinning in my head and felt like the whole room was moving...very odd and not pleasant! I'm not looking forward to going to bed tonight!

Hello, a wee update for those interested. I was sent home from work yesterday and I called NHS 24. I was sent to hospital and a doc confirmed it is Labyrinthitis. He said my ear drums look "sucked in" and my eyes are moving all over the place which both contribute to the dizziness. He has given me Buccastem. That has helped the nausea but not the dizziness and headache. He said my only option is to ride it out, it will pass. I am to rest and not go gallavanting all over the place so it's good I am off to lie on a beach for 10 days!

Thanks all for your help :) xx
