Rowing machine

I am unable to do high-impact exercise because I have RA. Would a rowing machine be a good option, and are the cheapo ones any good?

Yes rowing is good, the cheap machines are sh1t, the best is the concept 2. Also consider cycling and the cross trainer which I found excellent in by recovery for a knee injury.

Any half decent Gym should have a concept 2 andf the other machines.

What is a cross trainer please?

It's where you stand on foot plates and you have arm attachments, it's a motion akin to cross country skiing. Legs and arms together move the machine, no impact, smooth motion, very effective fitness wise, levels 1-20. See Here: http://www.fitnesspeak.co.uk/acatalog/x9500.htm

I agree with Loosehead. The cheap stuff is rubbish. The manufacturer's reasoning is that most people who take up any form of physical fitness will give up before they discover that the epuipment is not up to the job. In other words, it's not built to last.
