Why Do People Spit?

I often see young men spitting. Why do they do it? I have never had the urge to spit. Is it a macho thing copied from footballers? Is it a bit like a dog cocking its leg to mark territory? It just seems such an odd thing to do. If you've got a bit of mucus in your mouth, a tissue seems the obvious choice. Any spitters care to explain?

But we're talking about a particularly horrible habit, which is unnecessary - not an involuntary illness. It's completely different.

Well, as I've not got a '20-a-day' habit I won't deem myself a public health risk just yet!
More chance of catching something off the drinks bottles, which I make a point of ensuring that I don't put my lips to the nozzle.

I will never and shall never defend smoking (a dreadful habit) - however this question was specifically about spitting.
