which way is the split, vertically across the nail, or horizontally down to the cuticle?
Question Author
Vertically to the cuticle
I have the same on my thumb nail, keep treating the base of the nail, the cuticle with a good hand cream and eventually it'll come ok.
Keep it as clean and dry as possible and be prepared for it to take several weeks to grow away.
You can help it with a nail repair kit available from Boots etc

It's essentially pieces of shaped paper and a special
Glue

A few layers keep the nail stable while it grows out
Super Glue - that's what they'd do in A&E. Keeps the muck out and lets it mend from beneath.
Almond oil helps too, Boots. A few pennies.
Happy New Year sibs :) Hope you had a nice time xx

Thanks sibs, xx
I've had a vertical split on my index fingernail for years now, it just grows that way and you can see a very faint line right to my cuticle. If you have just split the nail and not damaged the nail bed then I'm pretty sure it will grow out but you do want to keep it well moisturised. I have no idea how mine originally got split but the damage on mine must be in the nail bed.
