I Need Reading Glasses.

i need good quality reading glasses, my eyes are getting increasingly worse over past year. i fear i will not only need readers but will need to wear them all the time. i seen bench designer glasses today in vision express , really nice £ 99 and with an anti glare lens they are £130 with eyes tested etc.

today on ebay i see same bench frames for £15 with free postage in uk.

so my question is , is it a cheaper , better option for me to buy frames off ebay and get lens fitted in say vision express or spec savers or maybe somewhere else.

your thoughts please.

Forget both SpecSavers and eBay, and go to a proper optician. Your vision is hugely important to you. How can you even contemplate not giving it the best...?

I always use Specsavers they are proper opticians and as good as anybody else. The problem with getting them off ebay is you may not be able to get the lenses for them, talk to Specsavers and ask them, I imagine they would do it for a small charge. The other thing to think about is if you buy designer glasses from Specsavers you will get 2 pairs for the price of one,

NEVER mess around with your eyesight, it's waaayyy too precious. Always use a proper optician, ALWAYS! You've received some good advice from the good people on this site. Please heed it. You won't regret it. I always go to Boots but I will be trying Specsavers when my next eye test is due.

Once my optician has done the test and given me the strength of the specs I need I go to Boots and buy some for about £15. There is a choice of frames. If you lose them as I have done several times it cost next to nothing to replace them.
I don't understand what you are saying when you say you will have to wear them all the time. By definition reading glasses are only worn when reading or for close work. If you have to wear them all the time then they are not reading glasses and you should buy some decent frames and lenses. Remember that as your eyes change you will need to change the lenses.

I always buy my frames from eBay, then send them (along with my prescription to reglazemyglasses.com.
It's all free post, tend to get them back within 6 days.
As an example, I have rimless single lens with uv filter and anti glare coating, which cost £39.
Nothing is too much trouble, I asked for the last pair to have 2mm added to the width on each lens and that was done free of charge.
In all, my rimless Ray Bans cost me £54 (£15 off eBay). In Vision Express the total cost would have been £220.

The snag with having one optician test your eyes and another make up the specs is that you can end up with in-fighting if there is something wrong with them. Both my wife and I, spec wearers for over 50 years, have had new specs which haven't been right. If one optician does the lot it's a no-brainer whose fault it is.
Incidentally, the like of Specsavers are franchises and you can get completely different service between two branches.

Shop around, beez - you get your eyes tested at one optician, there is no need to buy the specs from them, you just take your prescription to another reputable outlet (but it does make sense to get it all done in the same place, I had to take my first varifocals back 4 times before they were 100% right).

If your eyes are deteriorating, don't delay in getting them tested - sight is too precious.

I give my prescription to glasses direct and chose frames on line. Opticians don't like to put pupillary distance, which is distance between centre of your pupils, on the prescription - probably to hinder you using your prescription elsewhere. I measured mine myself using mirror and a ruler. You also need to tell supplier it is reading glasses you need. Mine are half lenses so I can look over top of them as well.

I had the anti glare coating, or whatever it is, a previous pair of glasses and hated it - just could not seem to keep them smear free and clean and when commenting on it to friends and family, many said the same - latest glasses do not have it and I notice no difference in glare or anything but they are easier to keep clean and clear.

£130 for glasses is expensive, to me anyway, i will take chills advice and check it out for a cheaper option. jeffa some of us may not have the money which you obviously have .

there is nothing wrong with specsavers. They are staffed by qualified opticians, just as other opticians are. what do you call "proper" Jeffa?

Get your eyes checked by an optician regardless of where you get your glasses from. There are many reasons why your sight may be deteriorating, not all of them spectacle related. Astigmatism us a common defect which can be corrected by glasses but not by plain old reading glasses. Opticians will spot many other potential eye problems that you may not yet be aware of.

you are not forced to spend a huge amount of money on glasses beez, there are cheap frames available at all opticians, they may not be "designer" but there is nothing wrong with them.

yes cazz if im going to have to wear them 24-7 then i want a pair that will look good, very few cheap ones look good, i dont mind spending up to 60-70 but £130 out of my price range, for glasses anyway.
