i am registered with linkedin for work, i have my full work history, phone numbers, etc etc uploaded. have had account 2 years now and been offered 2 jobs within 4 months recently.

this morning i logged on and received a message from a recruiter co ordinator from a very very well known company, a company i want to work for. the recruiter was a girl and she said in her message the following " do you think that is an appropriate profile picture to have on your account, did them children give permission " as soon as i read that i was shaking with anger and shock, that was 4 hours ago, i cannot get this out of my head. i wanted to write to her back telling her do not dare to insinuate anything underhand about me, they are my 3 children 2 boys and 1 girl, it was took on holiday in a hotel swimming pool by my wife, i cannot tell you in words what i want to say to this girl i am discusted and downright effing angry. my froend told me to mail her back but if i do that she will block me from any work. i want to call her tomorrow at office but i know when i call this company it is hard to be put through to correct dept.

please give your advice , what should i do to make her realise that she has made a very serious accusation, i want her to be so sorry for what she has said.

i put this photo of me on because it was about 5 years ago and i looked well in the photo, it was a nice family picture. i wanted to look like a family man and to be honest a goodlooking man in this picyre ( who doesn,t ) i have changed my pic to a work picture. but i see plenty of linked in profile pictures with family. why did she use the phrase " do these children give permission.

yes, i can see the point in maybe somebody keeping their kids pics private , off course , but it has really hurt me for her to say that .
lol so to prove you are an honest man you put an old picture on because you looked better in it?
I suggest you try not to talk/write/stew about it for the rest of today. You may see things differently tomorrow.
I'm going to be really honest and put a picture of George Clooney on mine. ;-)

less fromal.

We live in a funny world, one sees women advertising underwear on the underground, tampax and chewing gum on the TV, scans of unborne babies and "cries for help" on AB, but when someone wants to show himself as a family man by producing a family holiday photograph on Linkedin (whatever that is ) then it is questioned by a young faceless woman on the other end of a cyber link.

I wouldn't take it any further ..dick....my response would be ..*** you and mind your own business."
It looks as if you might have got hold of the wrong end of the stick (or; misunderstood).
I have just scrolled through my LinkedIn network and nobody has a family picture.

They are all head and shoulders shots of the individuals, admittedly some are less formal than others.

I would think it very odd if I encountered a family picture on a professional networking site.

I think you have got your knickers in a twist over nothing.
Well done for changing the picture.

Nothing to be gained from an email exchange with her now; its good to be able to come to somewhere like this to vent your anger and help put it in perspective.

do you really think your profile photo is appropraite?
Do you have permission from the children in the photo to be on a public website?
Question Author
the above is what she sent me.
Yes, we know. A picture of you with family may suggest that you are more dedicate to them than your job and therefore may prioritise them over your job / career.

i will not take it any further, it has just ruined my day to see this statement first thing in the morning. it is her problem , it is not my problem (cheeky silly ***) i am a family man who loves my kids with all my heart.

btw , i used this same pic as my facebook pic for months and no one said anything, in actual fact i got many many compliments on it from girls who at first glance thought i was ronaldo christiano haha
///do you really think your profile photo is appropraite?///

Could be read as, 'This is a site for professional people seeking professional positions, few prospective employers are going to want to see a photograph of a possible employee with his children in a family-holiday setting.'

///Do you have permission from the children in the photo to be on a public website? ///

Could be read as, 'As there is no reason for these children to appear on this website, and there is no indication who they are, do they know that they have appeared on the website?'

As has been said, it's a professional site......NOT Facebook.
LinkedIn is a career website. Facebook is personal.

i prioritise my kids over anything in this life ;-)
I know. Any parent does. But that's not the impression a prospective employer wants.
Why is this in body and soul?
So she didn't write 'them children' you did, that's a relief. Her first question, as a recruiter, is entirely reasonable. Her second would irritate me too but it's the sort of thing I'd expect lots of Answerbankers to ask!! Personally I would ring and ask to speak to a manager about it - I don't think family shots on linkedin is very professional either but I have seen people who do it.
I do hope, dd, that you don't use that nom de plume whilst seeking a position:)
It may also be worth taking into consideration that your children are Thai or perhaps Eurasian. This could have been why she questioned the appropriateness of the photo. You know it is an innocent family pic others may leap to wholly different conclusions.
