Exercise & Anxiety

hi :)
i'm 23, i have social anxiety and general as well as anxiety attacks. I am currently taking Cipramil Anti D's, and have been having cognitive therapy for some time with a great psychologist. I've read that exercise can really help reduce anxiety and stress, but i noticed my anxiety decreased dramatically when i did not exercise. One morning i went for a walk for 20 mins, a few hours after i was having severe facial flushing and extreme anxiety when i met up with my bf, and also again that night at dinner with my family. The anxiety lasted for 3 days then i felt calmer. I havent exercised since, would you happen to know what could be happening here? One doctor told me i should only do slow, gentle walking. Is this a sign of an over active sympathetic nervous system? What do you think?
Thanks i would really appreciate an answer!! Cheers :)

I found exercise to be a problem because I was over compensating when out of breath. ie I was hyperventilating which in turn triggered a panic. Vicious circle really. I got round it by reading up on breathing techniques and controlling my breathing. It took a conscious effort for a while to control it, but after a while (a long while!) it became second nature most of the time. If I feel slightly flushed / out of breath now, I step back and take count of how my breathing is. If I'm panting like a dog in summer, I slow it down....
Why don't you try yoga? It's great for physical and emotional health and I always have a great nights sleep after a lesson.
I went through a phase a few years ago of screaming in my sleep. I think it was caused by stress or anxiety. I found that doing some breathing I learned in yoga helped calm me down before I fell asleep and eventually my screams became moans and now I hardly ever have those either!
Whenever I feel nervous or anxious I put the breathing into practice - one thing I learned was to 'inhale' positive thoughts and 'exhale' the negative ones. I find it really works!
Good luck!
