I'm not sure. I have never managed it myself. It's almost like, you have been so intimate with that one person, for a fair old time, and it is very difficult to go back to being just friends with them. Not touching them, keeping your distance a bit, being KINDER to them than you were when you were together!! And NOT being jealous when they finally get it together with someone else. I admore people who can do that, but I think it only works where your relationship was basically friendship anyway.

Not always true!  My first love was when I was 15.  We went out for one year, broke up, granted it took a while to become friends but we did and became BEST friends for the next 18 years.  We both had other girlfriends/boyfriends but we remained extremely close.  We never thought of "getting back together." He married, I married, and we only lost touch after he moved to another state.

Absolutely you can. My ex and I were living together for five years before we went our separate ways. I've been married now for 8 years and Steve came to my wedding. He and my hubby get together when I'm not around and I can truly say he's even closer now than he was before. I get to meet the girlfiends as they come and go - one or two I've advised he get shot of (which he did) but for the most part I just want him to be happy! Its not easy initially but work at it! Its worth it. My hubby knows how close we still are and accepts that if anything happened to him (he's a firefighter) I'd be devastated jst as I know that if anything ever happened to Martin - Steve would be there for me. Even stronger friendships can come out of broken relationships.
