Why, when people are upset, do people tell them not to cry? Surely crying is good for you as it is an emotional release?

I know it is good for you, so if someon's upset why do we cuddle them and say "don't cry, it's alright"
simsfreq  just a thought  maybe it is because we don't like to see people crying so it is for our benefit we say don't cry, not the person who is weeping copious buckets!!!   In an attemp to cheer people maybe. Tears are associated with sadness and we don't like our nearest and dearest to be sad and we may feel inadequate as comforters so it is natural to try to stop the tears. I will try not to say it in the future!!.
I can hold back the tears for a long time, but as soon as someone says those dreaded words.....
Crying should be encouraged, the emotion has to come out somehow!

Men say it to women because,

a) it makes us uncomfortable and we don't know how to react or what to say, because....

b) many women (and some men I guess) use it as a tool for manipulation - crocodile tears

Strike me down in anger, but you all know someone who does this.
