agree Bathsheba ( are you perhaps sitting on Egdon Heath picking purple-backs ? ) having had a drug induced psychosis [ tmt: easy, stop the pain killer in my case ] I thought Gordie's description was a true bill.
The fact that I am prepared to admit in public I have had a psychotic illness is proof of successful treatment......

I'm quite shocked by some of the attitudes that were displayed on this thread. Based on past reactions and responses to other ABers, with similar problems, I'd naively assumed that we were all open minded and able to give advice while being mindful of the feelings of the person we were advising. I was wrong,as there seems to still be a huge lack of understanding of what mental illness can be and how it can affect how a person thinks and responds. Maybe a bit of education would be a good thing.

I do not hate as some would suggest.
My grand father committed suicide in a mental institute. He swallowed a bottle of Carbolic Acid . I did not just make that up.I have mentioned it before several months ago on this site.
My brother in law is in his mid 50's now.As a boarder at school at the age of about 10 he was allowed to have a week at his chums house during term.
He came back deeply disturbed and in some kind of traumatic shock. He developed what my wife describes as "bush baby eyes".
Shortly after he married I was called by his wife to come quick to the other side of London where they lived. He was threatening her and running berserk and in his underwear up and down the street.
He only wanted to speak to me and when I arrived he calmed down. I managed with great difficulty to get the Mental Health Officer to visit and my brother in law was placed in St Peter's Psychiatric wing. West London.
Forgot to add.He didn't just make a veiled threat. He actually attempted it when sharing a flat with a friend. He had taken Paracetamol and nearly a whole bottle of vodka. Friend's girlfriend found him and got an ambulance. More visits by me to Hammersmith Hospital Du Cane Rd to the Psychiatric wing.
He was a very good English Teacher. Suffered too much stress from pupil's parents. He taught in Silver Town East London. The area where teachers get threatened with a good hiding for giving detentions etc.He had too many breakdowns and had to retire from that career in his late twenties.
He has been forced to take redundancy from his civil service job where he and his wife worked together because of his outbursts with clients he had to interview.
He still has serious breakdowns and my wife recognises them when she talks on the phone just by the tone of his voice and content of conversation.
His father was a doctor. He could not help his own son and to this day no one in the mental health field of medicine can fathom out what is troubling him deep in his mind.
So. No one here please assume that I have not had any experience on a personal basis with mental health issues and I can be very sympathetic but not to time wasters.

@retrocop
So, despite every person out there having their own threshold for breakage, you are judging every sufferer you encounter against the same yardstick(s): individuals who may have been many times tougher than the person we are trying to help in this thread.
It is hard to phrase ideas like that without subtly implying that a given sufferer is weak and I hope it is not taken that way. All I am asking is that you make allowances for others not being as tough as the persons you use for your frame of reference.
I think this is at the heart of the attitudes sufferers can find themselves facing:
"it's not like your starving in Africa, what have you got to be so miserable about?" being one example of something said to me by a colleague.

Also, if someone really had grown up with not much parental attention and, consequenty they spend their adult life craving attention, do you really think that labelling them "attention seeker" is going to achieve anything other than trigger the standard response which is to make other people shun them even more??
Wouldn't that be mental cruelty? Or is that not a crime?

I took no notice of this thread because I am not the most sympathetic of people and could not offer gordiescotland any response that would help him.
But it kept appearing in latest posts, so I had to take a look, After reading every post I would reiterate what was said by, ummmm @10:11 Sun 19th Jul 2015
There is a group of posters on AB that seem to think that only thier opinions matter, and they strangley never seem to disagree with one and other.
Although it doesn't bother me I agree with Kylesmum that gordie can be rude, so why shouldn't she be able to say that without getting stick?

@talbot....maybe a post about being suicidal was not the place to be so blunt. We...none of us...know exactly what is going on in a persons mind. And *if* they are truly balancing on the edge of a precipice, then we should be careful not to send them over the edge.
That persons percieved rudeness does not come into it.

You can choose. It's your prerogative in a free world where personal opinion is allowed.( for the moment.)
You have given me a poser but to answer a straight question with a straight answer I would say you are like the tide. You flow one way and ebb the other.
Thank you for allowing me an opinion. :-)
