Can anybody suggest how I can sort this out.For over 4 weeks now I am awaken at about 5 in the morning with my stomach churning like a washing machine and a sensation of burning. This lasts about 2 hours, then when I get up I am dry wretching and have terrible flatulence. The doc has tried me on omeprazole and ranitidine neither of which help.I am otherwise a healthy 65 year old male.Any suggestions please what I can do to stop the build up of gas while i am sleeping.

You may not like the idea, but I'd expect my GP to send me for tests/investigation to find out exactly what's going on down there.
Could it be diet related?
I'm sure you'll get an expert opinion soon but meanwhile can you vary the rimes you eat in an effort to stop it happening at 5am ? Perhaps not eating (or boozing ☺ ) after a certain hour ?

Sounds like reflux oesophagitis.

Make sure that you sleep "fairly upright", continue with either Ranatidine or omeprazole and take Gaviscon Double action before you go to bed ( a good glug) and if you wake up in the early morning......take another "glug" of Gaviscon.
Even better than Gaviscon Double Action is Gaviscon Advance....my specialist insisted that my GP should prescribe the latter because (long, complicated medical explanation)....it does a better job, apparently.
^^^^ there you go^^^^^ good advice.

Thanks for your suggestions,i have already had a camera down and they found nothing, stopped drinking alcohol and fizzy drinks didnt eat late at night but still no better.
I find that eating my main meal at lunch time and eating very little or nothing in the evening helps a great deal. I don't go to bed until at least three hours after I've eaten. They say propping the head of the bed helps too.
i used to get bad heart burn too and i tried OMEPRAZOLE capsules and they worked and cleared it up
You may have a small Hiatus Hernia. The camera sometimes misses the smallest of these right next to your oesophagus. Burn like hell when you have laid flat for a few hours.
