Does Cough Mixture Serve Any Useful Purpose?

I have a bit of cold at the mo with something of a cough and err indoors keeps telling me to take cough mixture but all it does is soothe for about 3 seconds and you can only have a certain amount anyway so what is the point?

Went to doctor with really bad cold before Xmas. Told that doctors are now telling people that they are not a lot of use and to drink plenty of water instead. Did exactly that and felt better very soon.

If it's a dry, tickly, irritating cough, then I swear by Pholcodine, as you can see by the name, has a small amount of codine in. It gives a long lasting relief especially at night when trying to sleep. However, as someone has already pointed out, shouldn't be taken if you have a productive cough, as will supress phlegm.

It's because codeine suppresses breathing anyway. I would leave a cough, unless you think there's an infection.
