Is it true that if you lose one of your senses then another becomes stronger?

When you lose one of your senses, your other senses don't actually improve. What can improve is the brain's ability to interpret the information provided by the remaining senses.

So, a blind person doesn't actually have better hearing than other people but he may make better use of sound information. (e.g. if you can see where you're going, you don't necessarily notice the way sounds bounce off different surfaces in different ways. However, if you need this information in order to find your way around, then your brain gets better at interpreting these differences).
