Hi,  Well if you mean Japanese van type vehicles the mirror at the back is so that you can park in a parking space WITHOUT any part of the vehicle being over the space marker line,  this is no problem in the UK but in Japan with lack of space etc... any vehicle parked over any part of the line is an offence like parking on yellow lines and it is towed to the pound and you pay to get it back.

Ours is there to be able to see the towball in the rearview mirror so we can hitch up the caravan which is why we have that vehicle in the first place!

I thought it was to inspect if your kids have nits or not whilst the little terrors are in the back seat. Shows what I know!!
