It's been doing this for a few weeks now. It will suddenly start really burning and stinging - it really hurts! Then after ten mins or so it just stops.its not swollen, or red, and doesn't hurt to touch. Someone suggested gout but it doesn't fit the description at all. It's a toe I broke 10 yrs ago but has never done this before. Any ideas??

Athletes foot??
Signs and symptoms of athlete's foot include a scaly rash that usually causes itching, stinging and burning.

However, that does look red
Could be nerve damage or arthritis setting in..
i get this feeling in my fingers or toes but the end result is a burst blood vessel so bruising which you’d notice?

Toe looks perfectly normal and regular colour
you're right that it doesn't sound like gout, which doesn't usually come and go like that. Awkward taking it to a doctor when you know it'll stop as soon as you walk into the surgery, like the rattle in a car. It may be nerve damage, as patsy says, especially if the toe's had a past trauma.
Sounds like chilblains. I damaged my right hand about five years ago, and I get really sore chilblains only in the fingers of that hand once the weather gets colder.
could be, brainiac, though when I've had chilblains they're been a bit red and hung around feeling tender for days if not weeks. Rub aloe vera on them if so.
Unless you are a diabetic, then nothing obvious springs to mind.
Monitor the situation.

Thanks everyone. It's just really odd - come right out of the blue.
I agree with jno and brainiac...chillblains was what I was thinking. I'll just try and find out what I was recommended, brb>>>

If it was chilblains it would last a long time. I used to have them in the 'old days' when the ice froze on the inside of the bedroom windows!! They itch too, a lot!
^^^ hellywelly is spot on.....unlikely to be anything to do with chilblains.
Intermittent pain....not like chilblains where the pain is persistent.

\\\\Then after ten mins or so it just stops.its not swollen, or red, and doesn't hurt to touch\\\\

Again, i have never seen chilblains that are not red or painless to the touch.

.\\\\\its not swollen, or red, and doesn't hurt to touch.\\\\

Extremely unlikely to be the onset of rheumatoid arthritis where the involved joints are swollen, often red and nearly always painful.

Mortons's metatarsalgia has characteristic signs and symptoms different from our Poster.
Aaww, duh me, forgot about the itching, that is the worst part of chillblaines ,and yet I successfully diagnosed my Son with labyrinthitis by text messages last night. He was with GP this morning having it confirmed, and as they were in Swansea, they observed a minute's silence at 9.15. Found that very touching. x x
