My brother was always like that but I wouldn't say he had low self esteem.

Not necesarily but it could be that and they like to make other people look small to attempt to make themselves look bigger.

Could just be that they're not very nice!

Not always, but generally people who do not think much of themselves make themselves feel better by finding fault in other people. 

Some people are just rude, or maybe do not realise how hurtful their comments are.

if I take the proverbial out of myself first I can do it to other people. I do not have low self esteem I am morbidly obese and happy. Lack a bit of confidence now and again when something new comes along - but you have to get up early in the morning to catch me out - not very good then!!

nope,some people just have a bizzare and slightly offensive sense of humour.  Some people are just naturally blunt and although it seems like they're making fun or being mean they're just speaking as they find.

Have you noticed how people who always take the p*** out of others often can't take it when they are on the receiving end? I've seen mouthy people just crumble when someone has turned the tables on them.

I agree with morrisonker.

the comedy world is full of bizarre senses of humour and guess some people use that in everyday life, not realising that, just as not everyone likes the league of gentlemen, not everyone finds that kind of humour directed at them funny. There is a fine line between constantly sneering away at someone personally, and making good one-liners or 'of-the-moment' comments. No-one likes a constant stream of either though.

Hermia - I think the reason why those people 'crumble', is because, in their eyes, someone they have been having a nice laugh with all evening is suddenly venomous and cruel and is clearly not joking... and they don't understand why, as they were only joking.

I guess its about motive and intent as some people are just nasty and cruel, plain and simple - but not all.

Trouble is how do you know which?

I blurt out daft jokes when I am nervous and have offended people. Usuallly its a joke that my friends would love but to someone you don't know very well its 'over familiar' or inappropriate.

I feel terrible about it for days afterwards too. damn those nerves.

I would never want to hurt anyones feelings.
