rare diabetes

I hope someone can help, my father has been to the doctors today to get results of his blood tests, he's been told he may have a rare form of diabetes and also the gland in his forehead has pressure on it, its the gland that controls urine flow as he is urinating alot in the past 6 weeks, can anyone help? He is beside himself with worry as he's been told he will need an mri scan, does anyone know what this rare form of diabetes could be due to the symptoms I've mentioned, please help we're all really worried about him. many thanks

So sorry to hear about your father. I don't know anything about diabetes but it might be worth having a look on www.diabetes.org.uk, they have contact numbers so they may be able to give you some information over the phone.

Failing that you should go back to his doctor and ask for an appointment to sit down and have him explain everything properly to you. Make sure you get the answers you want and if necessary take a notepad and jot down any medical jargon so you can look it up on the internet when you get home.

I hope everything goes well with his scan. Try to stay positive - it really can make a difference.

dmj    sorry I know you would be worried when told things by doctors, as far as diabetes I have never heard of a rare diabetes. there's type 1 and 2  and type 2 comes on later in life (I have diabetes) diabetes mellitus.

Passing lots of urine is a symptom of diabetes,

MRI scan is just like an x ray.

what you say about gland with urine control and mention of rare diabetes - this could mean diabetes insipidus   as oppossed to mellitus sugar diabetes

hope this is of help can look it up or ask the doctor which type of diabetes.

hi dmj, peghead has a good point, you know that many people are upset/shocked by bad medical news when the doctor tells them about it, after that any explanation the doctor gives tends to go in one ear and out the other.  My wife is a nurse and often is with a doctor when he is seeing a patient and often relates that people seek her out later for an explanation/reminder of what the doctor said/really meant.

MRI scan is not just like an x-ray it is very noisy and can feel quite/very claustrophobic for some people, suggest that you start early preparing him for this.  maybe you should read this http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=149

dmj    Hello just to say my comment about MRI scan being an x ray and the post about this, I have had this scan (had to pay for it )  and yes you do have to go under a machine and a bit of noise but it doesn't take long  and they give you information 

  can see and know how you feel and with word rare diabetes would say this is inspidus as it is rarer than mellitus. all the best.
