Hi my mum is 75 and has a huge phobia of hospitals, she knows if she goes to see the doctor he will send her to the hospital so going to the doctor is a no go, she says she has had it for a few months and not said anything, the lump is very painful but hasnt grown in size since she first noticed it, she says she is losing weight but ive told her weight loss can be due to stress and worry, ive offered to take her to see the doc and so has my dad but she just doesnt want to hear it, does anybody any idea what this could be, cancer? Cyst? Any help appreciated. X

It could be either. She won't know until she's examined.
Will the Doc make a house call ?
It could be malignant or it could be benign. As it is painful it is more likely to be benign, but still could be cancer.
If she has a phobia of hospitals, I cannot think of an answer as she will need a biopsy of that lump.
Perhaps other Abers may have an answer.
mikey.....how would that help?
she needs to get checked out.
Phobia or not.
Mikey...she'll still probably need to go to the hospital.
Sqad....I thought maybe that a bit of "bedside manner" might help the lady.
LOL...LOL..."bedside manner?" never heard of it...;-)
could you talk to her GP about the situation? he may be willing to visit her at home and prescribe something to relieve her anxiety enough that she could go to a hospital appointment.
Do you know what triggered your Mum's fear of hospitals tamirra ?

Thank you for your answers, but there is no way anybody will get her to the doc/hosp, she has it in her head you go in those places and you never come out, her mum went in and died in there and this is where the phobia came from. My hands are tied. Is breast cancer very painful, i always thought it was painless? Xx
tamirra, you are giving up before you have tried. Talk to her GP about medication for her anxiety. It takes time but it is possible, even if she goes in to her appointment woozy. I have seen it done.
More people recover from a stay in hospital than die in there. I do empathize with your Mum, I hate them too. Mine was also triggered by losing my mum, however, I couldn't ignore something that could potentially be life threatening. My kids and grandkids would never forgive me. If it was my mum I'd discuss it with her GP. Best of luck with a tricky situation. X

We wouldnt do it, even my dad wont, its out of the question. Thank you for your advice anyway, as much as we love her
I was told by my GP that breast cancer is not painful
wouldn’t do what? talk to her GP?
Tam, phone and speak to her GP.
GP should hopefully be fully aware of Mum's history and if nothing else, then you'll have tried.
I have a certain amount of sympathy with your Mum Tamira, as I have a terrible fear of Hospitals as well.

But keep persevering with trying to get her Doc interested.
Hi i have anxiety regarding hospitals and procedures and before my appointment my GP gives me a lot of medication to be taken over 12 hours and I am for the most part completely out of it but still able to follow instructions and understand what is being said to me, perhaps she could ask her GP for sedation to go to the appointment.

My mum is a young 75 yr old, you could not do anything behind her back and get away with it lightly, she has all her marbles and is young at heart, i would not go and talk to the gp without her cooperation, i never have, if it was me with the problem she would try to advise me but if i refused to do something then nobody would mould me round, i think in this situation i have just got to go with the flow and hope she gets worried enough to take herself to the doctor x
