I think that it is possible for a man to have a platonic friendship with an attractive woman.I suppose that, occasionally he might have thoughts about 'what if' but that's OK as long as he keeps them to himself.

Quite possible, I think. I have several male friends who are just that and I always have had a few. The fellow chorister who introduced me to Mr J2 in France was becoming a fried of mine and it turned out that she and he had lived together for about a year a few years before (both widowed). It hasn't made any difference and she and I are still friends as are she and Mr J2. It' good when we all meet and chat about old days - although their period of co-habitation is only referred to discreetly!

And it's not just looks that attract people to each other. Personality plays a massive part, imo.

We have a long term House Guest, Female, Indian, Doctor, who will be with us for a while.
We are the best of mates, her family come to stay, I fancy the R's off her, but I'm Married, live under the same roof as my Wife and would not dream of upsetting the status quo.

I had a platonic female friend until recenty - we were having a conversation where I was up 4 steps on the stairs and she was at the bottom. Neither of us were looking at each other as we talked but just as she looked up at me, i was idly looking at her chest with no sexual connotation or thought - but the timing was bad - honest.
Nothing was said but she hasnt spoken to me at all since - even when she has been in the same building.
so in answering your question - it is barely possible if not impossible to have a platonic relationship.
