So I take it say at 12 o'clock midway and eat at 1 o'clock

What is the minimum period to elapse before I take next tablet ?

Well the before food may be essential or it may simply be a guide, every 4 hours approx should be fine.

Even if you only have a biscuit or cracker for a couple of doses.

It really doesn't matter......4 or 6 hours as suggested above.

I asked my GP the same question (about the hour before) and he said "a while before" would be fine, it just means not on a full stomach.

"a while" is a Scottish unit of measurement, somewhere between a mickle and a muckle.

Not just Scottish, jno. Where I work ( West Mids ) ''A while'' could be anything between half an hour to eight hours !.
