I use the sauna at our local leisure centre.

However, as I sit there, I often wonder if there are actually any health benefits to using one.

There have been studies which claim to have found health benefits linked to the regular use of saunas. e.g.
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/feb/23/saunas-help-you-live-longer-study-finds
However it might just be that people who use saunas in Finland also tend to be the same type of people who lead healthier lifestyles than others do anyway (e.g. by taking regular exercise and eating a healthy diet), so the evidence shouldn't necessarily be regarded as conclusive.

What does seem to be certain is that taking regular saunas is a bad idea if you're hoping to become a daddy in the near future:

Don't sweat over it.
Do whatever makes you feel cool.
I could no more sit in a sauna than boil my head!

Thanks Chris.

I don't want any more kids anyway, so that bit doesn't bother me.

I'm not going to stop though.

It's a good way to warm the bones, as I can't move to a lovely warm Spanish island.

I meet with Finns a lot, and they swear by the whole Sauna culture.

They claim it massively improves circulation (which makes sense), as the that brings the capillaries to the surface, and the plunge then moves them down into the deeper parts of the skin/organs.

They claim it helps protect against small illnesses, coughs, colds etc. (This may not be true, but as Buenchico says, Finns may be a non-random group)

And it's also a very positive, social experience. Not much to hide whan you are naked...
