If they sink to the bottom and lay flat on their sides, they're very fresh. If they're a few weeks old but still good to eat, they'll stand on one end at the bottom of the bowl. If they float to the surface, they're no longer fresh enough to eat.
Put the egg in a bowl of water in order to find out whether it's fresh or not:

I have used eggs that have been stored in a fridge and three weeks out of date. No problem.

There was a whole article on egg storage just a few days ago....the door of a fridge is the WORST place to store them (too much variation in temperature).....the main body of the fridge is the best place (if you intend to keep the eggs for some time) or in a cool place if using them within a few days of purchase.
It's a fact that they keep longer if kept at a constant cool temperature...hence, not in a bowl on the kitchen counter.
