Eyelid Eczema

Itchy...itchy...itchy!!
The last time I had this was about 6-7 years ago. I remember trying all sorts of creams and lotions...some recommended by pharmacists, some from friends...and a lot from the internet. It was by trial and error that I got my skin clear again. There have been a few minor threats of a flare up, until now. It's threatening to get nasty, and I need to get it under control...without getting stressed.
Googling takes me to countless sites with literally 100s of folk looking for a solution. Some find their own "miracle cures"...many continue to struggle. In most cases doctors are clueless as to cause. There are many...allergies, food sensitivities, stress, make up, shampoos, etc. I've ditched few things that might be a cause, but no improvement...though it's just been about 10 days.
Has anyone any experience of this or suggestions of what may ease it. The one thing I want to avoid is steroid creams as they thin the skin. It's a cycle of calm skin, followed by minute paper cut-like fissures under the eye and sometimes in the upper lid. Then there's the itching, and possibly inflammation. Then it becomes calm again. When it is calm it's "oh joy, maybe it won't come back".
