Choices

I’ve been referred back to Gynaecology re Cyst on my Ovary. I’ve decided to go ahead and have investigations done.

I was reading up on surgery and while I’m ok with either Keyhole or being sliced I’m not keen on the idea of Staples I’d much prefer Stitches.

Will I get a choice? Just the mere thought of staples gives me the heebies.

I'm not sure you would get a choice on closure (not qualified of course) I would trust my Surgeon.

It’s surgeons preference I believe, out of 5 of us Bariatric patients between us we had stitches glue and staples with the different surgeons

Can I ask what you had Islay?
I’ll take what I’m given but I’m not going to lie I’m scared of staples - ever since I stapled my thumb. Hence why I’m not too keen.

Glue, a wee bit itchy and very tempting to pick at the excess but no infection or puckering that the other had.

Sounds like an option. Given the location of the problem I imagine Glue or Stitches would be favoured. Were you able to have normal mobility with Glue?

Well as much mobility I could after stomach and gallbladder operation. They have healed nicely with little scaring

I can imagine it would take a bit of time to get back on your feet though after surgery. But hey you have done really well!

I’ll probably scar with the diabetes and being a poor healer but I don’t think it will be seen.

Yes, of course you can ask, but what happens at the end of the operation will not depend necessarily on your request.
If they have a long list of operations and are pushed for time, they will staple you. If someone else does the operation, e,g the registrar he may not have got you message and use staples OR, they may simply have forgotten your request.
Be assured that if you ask, they will do their best to accommodate you.
But no guarantees.

Thank you Sqad, duly noted. I could get a tattoo that says ‘nae staples’ but I won’t ;) I’ll just see what happens if and when it happens and cross that bridge when it appears.

I had staples and they were no trouble.
Don't know anything about keyhole though.

i have had staples, glue and stiches in my time. I haven't noticed much difference in scarring. Clearly Glue does not need to be removed as staples do. I think overall i preferred the glue

I know it sounds daft Bednobs but I didn't think they scabbed up the same - so less for me to pick at!

well in all hoesty, one of the glue ones is in a place i can't really see. I did pick the glue though ;)
The stiches one is almost invisible now. The staple ones are not invisible, but they were bigger cuts

Staples just give me the boak,coupled with stapling my finger a few years back, I just don’t fancy it. Glue or stitches would be my preferred choice, it’s something that I’d feel comfortable keeping an eye on.

We did Baths, but it took a while to confirm it. I’ve known what it is since about July/August last year, it was just very quiet until recently when it’s been causing problems. I fear the cyst is being unruly in some way and now it’s causing sleepless nights.

Can I just thank you all for your responses, it’s given me some confidence and I have a good feeling about this.

Good, am glad ;) Don't forget you won't be awake while the staples are being done, and the removal of them is piece of cake to the District Nurses who do it over here. Never felt a thing.

Will wait and see what needs to be done though. They might want me back in to have them removed Baths being considered a High Risk. But I’ll do a lot of research and enquiring first.
