Been For Endoscopy

In the end I had it done with just the freezing spray.
The girl found where I was bleeding from, and took some biopsies. Now the wait to see the consultant, which could take a good few weeks.
It was horrendous, (probably my own fault for being so stressed about it) but at least we now know why I am so flipping anaemic.

Sorry Squad, I didn't call her a Dr because she wasn't one, Her tag read "Endoscopist', I was just being idle calling her a girl, she was very efficient. I assume she is doing those procedures all day every day.
Couldn't fault her on the description of what was to take place, and the advice that I would be better with the spray rather than the sedative.
At least I wasn't reliant on anyone and after a rest was ok to drive myself home, and be compos mentis last night.
Of course you are correct aelmpvw, I am of that certain age and they do, much like policemen now look like school lads.

My bottom was not the subject\object of the endoscope - can't imagine banana flavoured substance being fired up that end !

ferlew, a bit confused by some of the posts on here.Did you have an endoscopy or a sigmoidscopy?

ah, it was an otherendoscopy then.

My OH has had several of these (gastroscopies, really) in the last few months and is now demanding the heaviest sedation they've got - in fact had to demand more in the middle of the last procedure, because the staff were taking so long over it that the sedative was wearing off. They did apologise.

You had banana flavoured spray??? Crikey, my chap apologised for the awful taste he was going to spray into my throat!
I ended up with tiny little blood blisters and it took four cans of Guinness and a couple of bottles or red to get rid of the taste.... :-(
Six weeks for me to see the consultant for results....I'm sure we'll both be fine.....xxx

I've had an endoscopy .
Right up to the time the doctor spoke to me about the procedure and what she would be doing ; i was still unsure ( and a bit scared ) as to what route i should take - spray or sedation .

In fact i had taken a taxi to the hospital instead of driving to keep my options open , until the last minute.

I think what sort of made my mind up was that, while i was in the waiting room i got talking to an elderly gentleman who was having the same procedure and told me it wasn't his first and he would be having the throat spray again as he had done previously .

I must admit it wasn't as bad as i had feared - although it wasn't pleasant it wasn't a traumatic experience

Just for clarification..
An endoscopy is a procedure which looks either down or up.
A gastroscopy goes down, through your mouth.
A colonoscopy goes up, through your bum.
Both are referred to as endoscopies.

I had a colonoscopy years ago with nothing. Could I have asked for sedation then.

I had one once and opted for the spray. Not nearly enough. Next time I'll demand to be stunned with a sledgehammer.

And years ago I was strapped down with straps around my body and I liked the security of that. So they just turned the table and one point I was looking down onto the floor, however, I have heard now you are not strapped in but expected to turn your body. Well that would be difficult for me with limited use of one arm.

The nurse was very caring and reassuring and held my hands , while i had the procedure

I remember a thread on here ( or it could have been somewhere else ) where some people stated that even though they had sedation , they weren't fully ' knocked out and could feel the pain , but couldn't make the staff aware ?

There was a nurse either side of me Bazile, they were fantastic I have to say. I swear the one on the left must have had three hands, she was holding my left hand, and somehow managing to operate the sucky thing for the excess saliva, I was so pleased I had cut my nails the other day, I'm sure I must have hurt the chap holding my right hand.

Blimey, Ferlew....they must have like you! Nobody held my hand.....there was no use of a sucky thing though I was expecting it.....I had to keep swallowing saliva and the vile spray....
Tell me, did you keep your shoes on or take them off?...x
