I'm a type one diabetic Patsy and a good diet isn't too dreadful actually, you ought to be able to devise something to assist without really missing what you are cutting out too much. Ease off the obvious things, sugar, heavy carbs etc, eat twice as many vegetables as starchy ones and, so a baked spud and tons of veggies / salad with lean meat for example and just moderate everything initially. Take the stairs instead of a lift, just small adjustments at first, then build on it. It's annoying but do-able and you have the chance to rewind it :) x
