It has turned out that my friend has little blood clots on his lungs making his breathing even worse. He texted me and 5am and it is his birthday today and asked me if I would go to the hospital, get a wheelchair, disconnect all his equipment sneak him out and get him drunk and buy him fags. I decided not to reply. By the time my other friend came in at 11 he was on morphine and barely conscious as well as having great problems breathing despite being on oxygen. I suspect it wont be long now a few days at the most. I have told the hospital of my friends request that I be there when me and 2 others be there when he dies and they always try to let the next of kin know if signs are imminent but it is not always possible, as every patient is different.

Gordie - I'm sorry to see this latest news & I wish you & your friend as much comfort as possible.
I'm sorry Gordie, I hope your friend is comfortable .
So sad Gordie, just do as you have so far and be the best friend you can be - I wish him a safe and comfortable passage.x
So very sorry, go and see him, talk to him even if he is unconscious tell him you're here for his birthday and that everything will be okay. It's all you can do and it's invaluable I think x
oh dear... hospitals are usually very good about letting folk stay if it is near the end.. you have been a good friend Gordie x
So sorry to read this gordie. I hope you can be with him, and that he goes peacefully.
I'm so sorry. It is looking as though your friend doesn't have long. I do hope that you and the other two people manage to get to the hospital in time, but if you don't I'm sure your friend will know you've done your best for him.
Just like to add my own commiserations gordie. Hope I have a friend like you with me when my time comes.
If you are not there don't blame yourself sometimes you don't get any warning even when you are sitting beside them. Sometimes a change in breathing pattern happens just before.... I have nursed many dying patients and even with monitoring they can still catch you by surprise.
