Working in the medical field I know that even at some private hospitals patients who wish to be seen by a private consultant still require a referral letter from their own family practitioner. You are entitled to a second opinion, NHS or private, as far as I am aware (Patient's Charter etc) if you are not entirely happy with your own doctor's opinion. You should talk to your own doctor if you are unhappy or concerned and maybe he/she will agree to refer you on to an appropriate consultant for further investigations/treatment. I believe there are some GP's who do private work but I wouldn't like to say how you would go about finding one. And, of course, each area of the UK and each private hospital have their own rules and regulations. I'm just letting you know the situation where I am! Good luck!
