Ingrown Toenail ???

Not sure if I have an ingrown toenail.
My big toe has been sore for some time (in the corner) but theres no swelling or redness.
I had an operation to remove an ingrown toenail from my big toe on my other foot when I was 17 and *THAT* looked like a purple ping pong ball. But theres nothing like this on my other toe, just sore and ,if pressed on, excruciating.
Anything I can do or do I need to see GP (or nurse practitioner)?

Thanks.

I had an ingrown toenail that didn't look anything like a purple ping pong ball, so I'd say that was a definite possibility.
Sounds like another ingrowing toenail.
Take painkillers e.g ibuprofen 400 mgms ans see your GP/Nurse practitioner on Monday.

Thanks jno.
Just comparing a previous experience here. THAT toenail was definitely ingrown, just not so sure about this one...
Bloody painful tho :-(

Thanks Sqad.
As you know, I don't like to visit GP's unless absolutely necessary. But might have to...It hurts!
yeah, and the injection during the op to treat it hurt too. Are you sure the other one hadn't got infected, if it turned purple?

Just out of curiosity, whats the treatment nowadays for an ingrown toenail?
When I was 17 (36 yrs ago) I had a general anaesthetic and half of my toenail sliced off.

Yes could have been jno. Seem to remember a lot off puss coming from it. It was a long time ago tho.

Thank you Choux.
A visit to the doctors may be in order :-(
Certainly painful though!
These days they just snip the toe off with a branch cutter .. just above the nail !

Does that mean that from now on, I'll just be known as *it*?
Nah, probably the lesser spotted short nailed baldy :)
It .. will be a talking point. Carry it with you wherever you go .. keep it in a jam jar full of white wine vinegar.
It will remind you never to complain about toe pain again !
I have known someone with a painful ingrown toe nail and they were told (by a chiropodist, no less) to cut a small 'v' shape from the middle of the nail to alleviate the pressure in the short term. It worked for him.

Arrgghh!
I'll try the quacks first....
Big girl's blouse :) :)
Don't stub it and roll on Monday.

Don't mind admitting it ;-)
I don't like pain....
A few years ago I had a constant pain in the side of my thumb, not unlike big toe pain. .. about the same time I had to make some aluminium gutter brackets from plate alloy. Whilst drilling holes in the alloy, the drill bit snared and then snapped ! .. The end result was the remaining bit of drill passed straight through my thumb, just above the nail, then on through into the workbench below.
The words, deary me, oh dear and blow me, all sprang to mind ... none of those were uttered !
After that I forgot about the pain in the side of my thumb ! But I was the talk of the school according to my daughter ... " my dad is mega brave, he has had his thumb pierced".
Local hero ... I can live with that .. !
local anaesthetic and the ingrown part cut off, ie a slice down the side. This took a lot of the nail off the pad, so there were a few weeks of bathing it in salt water daily. That was five or so years ago and it hasn't recurred, touch wood.
