Dental Hygienist :(

The last two times I have been to the hygeinist it has been really painful. She said this was because I have some receded gums and when she scrapes over the receded bit, it hits the dentine and causes me to jump. She suggested I use a softer brush and use circular movements and don't scrub. Is there anything I can do about this, or are the receded gums like that forever?

I use an electric toothbrush GENTLY, a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and a mouthwash for sensitive teeth and take ibuprofen before I go. Doing the multifactorial attack has improved things markedly both in terms of pain and in terms of needing less plaque removed. I use Ultradex mouthwash from Amazon...other suppliers may be available but its the only mail order place I can find it.
Electric toothbrush and Corsodyl toothpaste and use dental floss harps right down to the gum. Sorted.

I feel you are brushing with your tooth brush at the wrong angle to effectively clean away plaque. use A 45 degree angle pointing towards the top or bottom gum of the teeth. For behind the front top and bottom two, have the tooth brush at a 90 degree angle

Simply just brushing your teeth is quite pointless. It's critical to brush correctly.
