Fast Heart Beat After Drinking Wine
7 Answers
I rarely drink but last night I drank a lot of wine at a friend's big birthday. When I tried to go to sleep my heart was beating SO fast for ages- over 100 bpm. I know that this can be caused by a lot of things, but I wondered why drinking a lot of wine brought it on for me? It's the first time it's happened, to my knowledge!

"Your pulse quickens after just one unit. Alcohol is a vasodilator - it makes the peripheral blood vessels relax to allow more blood to flow through the skin and tissues, which results in a drop in blood pressure. In order to maintain sufficient blood flow to the organs, the heart rate increases"

I agree with the post of hc above.
Simply put......alcohol is a cardiac stimulant...it makes the heart beat faster.
The question is can it make the heart beat so fast that it causes the dangerous condition of atrial fibrillation?
The other big question is could alcohol make an already damaged heart worse, predisposing to a life threatening situation?

I've just been through lengthy tests as I suffer from bad palpitations, the cardiologist has said there's nothing wrong with my heart the uneven beats are normal for me. I was offered pills but both seemed to have more side effects ts than I was willing fo risk. I've noticed that caffeine and alcohol make things far worse so stay off both as much as I can. Anxiety and stress don't help either so maybe you could look into these too.
