Is foot and mouth disease dangerous for humans?

The disease in humans is actually hand, foot and mouth disease, and is caused by a different virus from the animal Foot and Mouth disease. Hand, foot and mouth is common in childhood and although mild, is quite contagious. Symptoms are rashes on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, and sores in the mouth, which may turn into mouth ulcers. There may a fever and sore throat, too. Normally no medical treatment is needed and most sufferers are better in a week.

Advice from the Department of Health is that it is very rare for people to contract foot and mouth disease. There has only been one recorded case of FMD in a human being in Great Britain and that was in 1966.
