Should a chest infection be painful?

I think it’s possible to have an infection without pain. Are you suffering, Mexican?

Yes it can be. With any chest infection you will have raised inflammatory markers.

No...not necessarily, although it may well be if the lining of the lung (pleura) is involved.

I took the last of a course of antibiotics today but it is not a great deal better,in fact in the last two days my chest has been very painful. Sneezing is a nightmare!

Sounds a bit like pleurisy and the pain can last up to two weeks.
Be patient.

I had a really nasty chest infection a few months back, with the preceding bug it took a while to clear and I had a lot of pain with it. I was checked for pleurisy, as I'm at a greater risk of it, but none found and I had a chest Xray done too. So mine was painful even without pleurisy.

It went away as the infection cleared up though it took a while, was just things aggravated by it, especially all the coughing I think. Did you have the pain when you saw the doctor to get the antibiotics, I'm assuming they had a listen to your chest then?

I get a lot of these, (COPD), usually more breathless and producing mucus.
Occasionally very painful, back and sides, hospitalised twice because of it.
