The reason for this is because people believe a woman should be able to decide if she goes through such an experience or if she is ready or capable of bringing a baby into the world.
The population crisis is real. Why bring babies into the world simply for the sake of it? There is enough hurt let alone forcing women to bring unwanted babies into the world.
Only a woman knows what she wants an if she doesn't want nine months of a baby growing in her followed by a lifetime of responsibility and financial burden bloody fair enough.

The explanations so far pretty much cover the basis for giving women the choice. What is lacking is the same degree of freedom for men. Sadly, even shockingly often, men end up becoming fathers in spite of not wanting to if/when on the other hand the woman wants to become pregnant. Women have the Pill, the morning after pill, abortion and sterilisation. Men have sterilisation, or the condom which half a century and more ago was better than nothing but is woefully behind women's options. Make no mistake, if men had the option of contraception as effective as women's then we would see a significant change in things, including at least a temporary drop in the birth rate in many countries, including the UK until women ensured they had a Yes from the man so he releases his fertility or else women in significant numbers switched to sperm banks.
Some have a conspiracy theory to explain why the male contraceptive methods so far developed and found effective have not reached market years later. Women are at a distinct advantage in these matters.

I think that being "pro choice", for me at least, is the least bad option of the two....I mean there are only two options....one is to allow people who have the mental capacity, as defined by the Mental Capacity Act, to have control over what they do with their own bodies. The other is to remove that freedom from them. Those who remember or know about the years when abortion was illegal and the terrible things women went through would surely not want those times back?
pro choice is NOT the same as pro abortion.
